Recorded in two portions, first half in August 1988, then in February 1990- both
times in Rainbow studio with Jan-Erik Kongshaug as technician.
Ten jazz instrumentals, a combination of well and lesser known latin and be-bop
standards. Notice the great interpretation of Herb Ellis’ ballad ‘Detour Ahead’,
the up-tempo blues ‘Tenor madness’ including the surprising change of keys, the
latin tunes ‘The Dolphin’ (a.o used as signature tune for a TV Yachting Boat series)
and ‘Passages’, Mulligans ‘Line for Lyons’, the up-tempo swinging ‘My shining hour’,
‘Speak Low’ by Kurt Weill and ‘I’ve never been in love before’, and with ‘Beatiful
love’ and ‘My funny Valentine’ rounding off the program.

Review Guitar Player may 1991, "Noteworthy" |
|
”Hailed by Jim Hall and others, Stewart lives up to his reputation on this all-digital
CD. Supported by a capable Norwegian rhythm section (including second guitarist
Knut Mikalsen), the Scottish [sic] jazzer deftly chains one brilliant phrase
after another, elevating the material to more than just another set of standards.

Review Jazznytt 4/1990 |
(Translated from norwegian by Villa Records)
”[…] This is in fact one of the smoothest guitar-productions I can remember to have
heard […] these musicians match very well, it sounds very homogenous […]. Louis
Stewart is the main feature, because he is the man performing a guitar playing of
great virtuosity, with a sure touch and with sensitivity in the sound treatment,
relegating any critic remarks to ‘standing room only’ at the rear of the consciousness
[…]. Venaas and Hansen are given ample exposure, and I am pretty impressed and heartwarmed
when hearing again what a high international level these norwegian top musicians
are performing at […]. Finally, a brief comment on the sound quality […]. This is
digital all the way, and you have never heard a better sound! -ER” |

Review Orkesterjournalen 1992

(Translated from swedish by Villa Records)
”[…] The 49-year old irish guitarist Louis Stewart has a formidable technique and
plays restrained and well in a style that is timeless and has a wonderful sense
of form […]”

Review The Jazz Guitar Society of Western Australia april 1991 |
|
”The sound quality on this album is excellent, it is fully digitally recorded, and
the sound balance is just right with Louis’ guitar coming through crystal clear.
Every track on the album is a gem ranging from bossa novas, bebop, swing and ballads.
Included in the liner notes of the CD is a transcription of the first 144 bars of
Louis’ solo on ‘Tenor Madness’. The standout track on the album is a beautiful and
sensitive interpretation of Herb Ellis’s ballad ‘Detour Ahead’. The norwegian musicians
backing Louis are of a very high standard and rhythm guitarist Knut Mikalsen also
takes the occasional solo. This album is highly recommended.”
